I write as the president of Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust. We are deeply concerned about the recent announcement from American Iron and Metal (AIM), also known as Bucksport Mills LLC, regarding its recent petition to abandon and intent to release water from the dams of Alamoosook Lake, Toddy Pond and Silver Lake. These three lakes have been integral parts of the Orland and Bucksport watersheds for more than 150 years, supporting diverse ecosystems that include nesting eagles and loons, turtles, various migratory fish and numerous other species.
Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust owns and manages more than three miles of frontage on the Dead River, and we understand the significant ecological and recreational impact that could result from the abandonment of these dams. Failure to responsibly address the ramifications of AIM’s decision to abandon these dams could not only result in significant environmental consequences but will severely impact our community as a whole. Hundreds of lake residents, their respective communities’ property tax base and all who enjoy fishing, snowmobiling, boating and picnicking on these lakes in all seasons could be significantly and forever affected.
We believe that such abandonment would disrupt wildlife habitats that have become naturalized, jeopardizing the balance of local ecosystems. Therefore, we urge local authorities to collaborate on finding a sustainable solution that ensures the perpetual maintenance of these dams. This approach is crucial to preserving the lakes’ water levels and the habitats they support, safeguarding both ecological diversity and the recreational opportunities that our community treasures.
At Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust, we remain committed to advocating for the protection of our natural resources and working toward solutions that help all stakeholders. We encourage community members to voice their concerns and support efforts aimed at securing a positive outcome for our beloved lakes and surrounding areas.
