Mainers living in the southern and Midcoast regions can now select Taro Health during the upcoming open enrollment season, which begins Nov. 1
PORTLAND — Taro Health, a fully-licensed health insurance provider serving individuals, families, and small businesses, has expanded to offer plans in York, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc Counties, building on its success in Cumberland County, where Taro began serving Mainers two years ago.
Since entering the Maine market in 2022, Taro Health has built up a large provider and hospital network to provide more accessible, affordable, and comprehensive care to Mainers throughout the southern and Midcoast regions of the state through its individual and employer plans.
Mainers who enroll with Taro Health will have access to not only traditional primary care providers but will also have the option to choose from nearly 40 direct primary care doctors that partner exclusively with Taro for in-network coverage — more options than any other health insurer in Maine. Additionally, they will have access to a broad network of specialists, facilities, and hospital care, including big systems like all of MaineHealth, Northern Light Health, and Mass General Brigham in Boston.
Taro Health’s expansion comes at a time when health care costs in Maine are rising faster than they are in other parts of the country. For example, in Maine, 19 pecent of personal expenditures are on health care, exceeding averages for New England and the U.S. Taro’s mission is to provide more access to better care at a lower cost. Access to DPC physicians allows patients to build a stronger relationship with their doctors through longer visits; increased appointment availability; same- or next-day sick visit access; and opportunities to get care in-person and over the phone, email, or text — all without a co-pay or surprise fees. Taro also offers plans that include free mental health benefits, as well as low deductibles.
“Mainers deserve more value and better care from their health insurance,” said Jeff Yuan, co-founder of Taro Health. “While traditional health plans are only there when you are sick, we want to help you get healthy and keep you that way. Since we entered this market nearly three years ago, thousands of Mainers have discovered our unique model of insurance, and we firmly believe that it is helping them live healthier lives and thrive.”
Dr. Jennifer Beall of Casco Bay Direct Primary Care, who is part of the Taro Health network, praised the insurer for the opportunities it has created for Mainers of all ages and life stages.
“As doctors, we appreciate that medical decision-making is once again done in a conversation between the patient and their doctor,” Dr. Beall said. “Taro Health has built a model for health insurance coverage that allows us to do that in a way that’s affordable for Mainers.”
Amy Landry, communications director for Benchmark Real Estate, is one of the many small business leaders who has chosen to offer Taro Health as an option for the company’s employees.
“We wanted to be able to provide our employees with an affordable option for high-quality care that they could access whenever they needed to,” Landry said. “Since there’s no cost for primary care in general under Taro Health’s plans, it’s so much easier for people to be more proactive about their health concerns and seek out the kind of preventive care that staves off so many chronic health issues.”
Individuals and families can find Taro Health’s plans on Maine’s CoverME.gov website, the state’s health insurance marketplace, during this upcoming open enrollment season, beginning Nov. 1. Employers and small businesses can buy or switch to Taro year-round.
