With 7:40 left in the first period, Husson University quarterback Max Clark threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Nason Berthelette to pull the Eagles into a 7-7 tie with Springfield College at the Winkin Sports Complex in Bangor on Saturday afternoon.
But the visiting Pride went on to score the next 69 points to earn a 76-7 victory which is the most points Springfield has scored in a game since 1931.
It is Springfield’s third straight win over Husson and the Pride has scored at least 45 points in all three victories.
The Pride racked up 616 total yards, including 557 on the ground. Husson finished with 238 total yards.
Senior quarterback Jacob Silvester rushed for 122 yards on four carries including touchdown runs of 53 and 47 yards as the Pride built a 49-7 halftime lead. He also threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Barcello.
Graduate student fullback Arsen Shtefan lugged the ball 12 times for 109 yards and scored on runs of 22 yards and one yard. Blane Hart had five carries for 79 yards including TD runs of 22 and 16 yards.
Johnell Fillippini, Bode Dunn and T.J. Welch had TD runs of 16, 2 and 55 yards, respectively, in the second half. Drew Heenan threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Logan Schenck.
For Husson, Clark completed 15 of 27 passes for 154 yards. Berthelette hauled in four for 92 yards and the touchdown. Cullen Casey had four receptions for 19 yards.
Jed Lober’s 30 yards on 11 carries led the Husson ground game.
Billy Carr’s 12 tackles and Mike Mendicino’s seven paced the Pride’s defense while C.J. Nicely’s 12 tackles, Ryan Banister’s 11 and Ethan Turgeon’s 10 led the Eagles.
Husson will travel to Norwich (Vermont) for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
