A man was found dead Monday after an early morning fire destroyed an Auburn home.
The fire broke out in a Washington Street North home about 1:36 a.m., according to the Auburn Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived at the home, they found heavy flames had spread throughout both floors.
The roof had begun to collapse and the second floor’s structure was compromised, which limited “fire suppression operations to the exterior of the building,” the Fire Department said Monday.
Investigators later found a body in the rubble. The body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office for identification. Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said authorities believe the body is that of 60-year-old Steven Berry, who lived alone in the home.
The Maine fire marshal’s office is unable to determine the cause of the fire because of the extensive damage, Moss said.
No additional information was immediately available.
