A New Hampshire man who was critically injured Sept. 9 when he crashed his bicycle in Acadia National Park has died.
John Bennett “JB” Parrett, 70, passed away from his injuries two days after his foot came loose from a clip-in pedal as he was biking on the Park Loop Road near the Cadillac North Ridge Trail crossing. Parrett was an experienced road cyclist who, though wearing a helmet, suffered significant head injuries when he fell from his bike, park officials said at the time.
Acadia officials confirmed his death on Tuesday.
Parrett, a resident of Newmarket, N.H. was a Navy veteran and photographer who, after leaving the military, worked in software development for nearly 30 years, according to his obituary. He also volunteered in the marine education program at University of New Hampshire and for Gundalow Company, a maritime heritage organization.
He is survived by his wife, two adult children, and three grandchildren.
Deaths in Acadia are extremely rare, but not unheard of.
The park gets millions of visitors each year, with the vast majority coming in the summer months. Acadia has averaged around one or two deaths per year for decades, including deaths caused by medical problems such as heart attacks.
