ORONO — The Salon Series, University of Maine Raymond H. Fogler Library’s discussion series focusing on a variety of contemporary issues, kicks off again on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the library’s Lynch Room, also known informally as the Salon.
Each event in the Salon Series will feature a conversation between guest speakers and attendees, both in person and virtual. Topics will include a comparative exploration of gender and women in higher education in the United States and Eastern Europe, what it means to respect animals and reasons for hope and optimism in a changing climate.
The first event is scheduled for Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. and will encompass the intricate relationship between mental health, social media, and politics. Speakers — UMaine experts and students in social work, psychology and other fields — will explore ways in which social media shapes political views and, subsequently, impacts mental wellness. Attendees will learn how to disagree without being disagreeable by spotting misinformation, groupthink and logical fallacies, as well as how to create a balance between staying informed and maintaining one’s mental well-being.
For more information and for the Zoom link to the event, please visit the library’s website.
The Salon, formerly known as the University Club, serves as a re-envisioning of the Lynch Room that offers a space for our community members to come together, exchange ideas and explore diverse topics of interest. Generously supported by Fogler Library donors and co-sponsors, including the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, the Honors College, the Office of International Programs and the Counseling Center, this series is designed to spark conversations that leave a lasting impact.
