A Maine school abruptly closed its doors because it isn’t suitable for students.
Mold problems were discovered at Mountain Valley Middle School in Mexico earlier this year though it’s not clear if that’s the issue because officials did not point to a cause.
An air quality test conducted by an industrial hygienist deemed the building is no longer a safe and healthy place to work and learn.
The message was sent out to parents on Tuesday in a letter from Regional School Unit 10 Superintendent Deb Alden.
Classes are canceled for the rest of the week and the building is closed to students until Friday.
On Friday, kids can come pick up their belongings such as laptops and personal items.
Students will begin remote learning Tuesday.
A new school is being built. However, it won’t be completed for at least another year.
School leaders said they’re “brainstorming ideas and exploring multiple locations.”
Alden said staff would meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the high school auditorium.
She added they’ll continue to be transparent over the next 14 months.
