University of Maine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy has been named to the National Science Board.
The UMaine president was chosen by President Joe Biden to join the ranks of 24 board members who act as the governing body of the National Science Foundation.
Ferrini-Mundy, who was named as UMaine’s president in 2018, will advise Biden and Congress on policies for national science and engineering programs.
The National Science Foundation is an independent agency of the federal government that supports and advises on fundamental research and education in non-medical sciences and engineering. It funds about 25 percent of the research efforts of universities across the country.
Ferrini-Mundy was chosen due to her “efforts to position UMaine as a leader in advancing Maine’s workforce and economy,” the White House said Wednesday. It also noted that, during Ferrini-Mundy’s tenure, the University of Maine achieved a certification that ranked the school among the nation’s most prominent research universities.
Ferrini-Mundy will also advise the NSB on its future direction, budget, funding allocations and evaluation of major research initiatives.
