Lisa Marguiles’ recent column in the BDN makes a strong argument that government works best when it is as local as possible. The old adage,”all politics is local” is as true today as ever.
Federalism as outlined in the Bill of Rights, specifically the 10th Amendment emphasizes this by stating that the federal government only has powers dedicated to it by the Constitution and that all other powers not forbidden to the states by the Constitution, are reserved to each state, or to the people.
Augusta is half a day’s drive from where I live but Washington, D.C. is further. I know who my local senator and representatives are and feel like I can let them know my views and they will at least listen.
Whether you are talking about a national abortion bill, gun control, or marijuana legalization, people at the ground level know what is best for them.
