A man died after he was shot by a deputy in Phillips on Tuesday.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls around 5:45 p.m. reporting a possibly suicidal man with a gun. One of the callers thought it was a BB gun.
Deputy Jesse Clement responded and found the man, later identified as 61-year-old Lawrence Scott, on the side of a bridge on Salem Road in Phillips.
According to Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols, Clement tried to talk Scott into getting help, but he allegedly refused.
Nichols said the deputy told Scott to drop the weapon, but he allegedly refused. Scott then reportedly raised the gun toward Clement, who then shot him.
Scott died at the scene.
Clement has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in all police shootings.
The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating the use of deadly force.
