Uncle Henry’s will stop publishing its iconic weekly Swap or Sell It Guide next week, WMTW reported.
The thick booklet of classified ads has been required reading for Mainers hoping to buy and sell everything from farm equipment to firearms.
Uncle Henry’s said it is ending publication because the company that prints the magazine has closed, according to WMTW. A note on the door of Uncle Henry’s Augusta office said it was the fourth time a printing company it used had closed.
Uncle Henry’s was first published in January 1970 by Henry Fowler, who owned a print shop in Rockland. Since the mid-1980s it has been based in Augusta.
In recent years, the magazine faced competition from online listings, including Craigslist and Facebook marketplace, but had continued to publish weekly and additionally posted its listings on its website.
In 2014 the magazine was the focus of the History Channel reality show “Down East Dickering.”
The last issue of Uncle Henry’s weekly Swap or Sell It Guide comes out next Thursday, Nov. 14, according to WMTW.
