A hazmat team responded to the Hampden mail facility over the weekend.
The team was summoned to the Eastern Maine Distribution Center after a package tore open, revealing another smaller package inside containing a white powder, according to Steve Doherty, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service.
No employees were exposed to the powder. Doherty said the substance was illegal to mail, but didn’t identify the white powder.
He said that postal inspectors are still looking into the origin of the package.
No additional information was immediately available.
