It took police three tries to stop a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 on Friday night.
At about 6 p.m. Bangor Regional Communications Center received multiple calls about a vehicle driving south on the northbound side of the interstate near mile marker 205, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
A Maine State Police sergeant took up a position at mile marker 197, but the wrong-way driver went around him and continued south. The officer followed and tried to stop the vehicle again, Moss said.
The driver then took the exit 197 onramp going the wrong way, at which point the officer “used his vehicle to immobilize the wrong-way driver,” Moss said.
The driver, Eric Nicolar, 60, of Indian Island, was arrested, brought to Penobscot County Jail and charged with operating under the influence, driving to endanger and failure to stop.
No one was injured in the incident, Moss said, and both vehicles were towed from the scene.
It’s the second time in a week that a person suspected of operating under the influence has tried to avoid police while driving the wrong way on I-95.
