An animal resembling a coyote was spotted outside Fairmount School and Fourteenth Street School in Bangor when third and fourth graders were having recess, a school principal said Wednesday.
All students who were playing outside were immediately brought into their respective schools when a Fairmount School staff member saw the animal, Cathy Stankard, principal of Fourteenth Street School, said in an email to families on Wednesday. The Bangor Daily News obtained a copy of the email.
Despite being on separate streets on Bangor’s west side, the Fairmount School and Fourteenth Street School properties abut one another. Fairmount School teaches grades four and five while Fourteenth Street School houses kindergarten through third grade.
The animal did not come into contact with anyone and no one was injured. School staff called Bangor’s animal control officer who was “investigating the situation,” Stankard wrote.
“We encourage you to take precautions in your neighborhoods and backyards to ensure the safety of your family and pets,” Stankard wrote. “As always, the safety of our students is our top priority, and we will continue to take appropriate precautions to ensure their well-being.”
The Bangor School Department and Trisha Bruen, Bangor’s animal control officer, did not return requests for comment on Wednesday.
