A new ice cream shop could be coming to a former restaurant space in Wiscasset.
Mainely Scoops, which plans on serving ice cream and snacks, could open in the small building at 277 Bath Rd., which is also Route 1, according to documents from the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission. However, it’s not clear when the business could open.
It would not be the only recent ice cream-related development in the region. Another ice cream business opened this summer along Rockland’s waterfront, despite initial pushback from neighbors. In Waldo County, the owner of a busy ice cream stand on Route 3 in Belmont, Super Scoops, announced at the end of this summer that she was stepping down and looking to sell the business, amid a wave of food business closures that hit Maine in the fall.
The potential future ice cream shop on Route 1 in Wiscasset used to house Jodie’s Cafe and Bakery after it opened in 2022. It has since moved to a new location on Water Street to expand, according to MaineBiz.
The Wicasset Select Board approved the ice cream shop’s business license on Nov. 19.
Because it’s taking over the location of a restaurant that moved less than two years ago, Mainely Scoops will not need a site plan review, according to local documents. However, if it plans to make any changes to the property, it will be required to submit an application.
