Multiple vehicles were involved in multiple crashes on Interstate 395 in Brewer on Monday morning.
At around 7:20 a.m., a westbound driver lost control of their Toyota Tacoma due to icy conditions and crashed in the third lane, coming to rest facing eastbound and blocking traffic.
Within the next few minutes, three more crashes occurred, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. Ten vehicles were involved in those crashes.
A female driver was transported from the scene to Saint Joseph’s Hospital after reporting pain she believed was caused by an airbag going off.
Police then closed the westbound lanes of I-395 for approximately 30 minutes. While officials were on scene blocking off the crash sites, a number of vehicles used a crossover to travel onto the eastbound side of I-395.
Moss reminded drivers that using the crossovers in the center of interstates is illegal.
As multiple vehicles attempted to cross over from the westbound side into eastbound traffic, a two-vehicle crash occurred. The crash caused traffic on the eastbound side of I-395 to slow to one lane for around 35 minutes.
No charges were issued for drivers that had used the crossover, according to Moss, as they had driven on before troopers could respond to the scene.
Further information was not immediately available Monday evening.
