A former Orono and Ellsworth fire chief has been hired to fill the same position in Bangor.
Geoffrey Low was picked after a comprehensive search, the city of Bangor said Friday. Low replaces Thomas Higgins, who retired in September after 34 years in the department.
Low will start as Bangor’s fire chief on Jan. 6, after the City Council confirms his appointment during a Dec. 23 meeting. He will leave his job as deputy fire chief for Ellsworth, which he started in May.
He will have a starting salary of $124,405 during a three-year contract, according to the agenda for Monday’s City Council meeting.
Before Ellsworth, Low worked as the Orono fire chief from 2018 to 2020 and then became public safety director. He was Auburn’s deputy fire chief from 2010 to 2016, before his promotion to chief, where he served until 2018.
He has more than 30 years working for fire departments, according to the agenda.
“Geoff has had the opportunity to serve in virtually every position within the fire service, from team member to leader, and he embodies all the qualities and characteristics necessary to lead the department into the future,” City Manager Debbie Laurie said.
