We are lucky in Maine to have Republican and independent senators who are not in President-elect Donald Trump’s pocket. Their votes could be the deciding ones that make sure his nominees are qualified people who think for themselves.
I was encouraged to read about Sen. Susan Collins’ probing interview with Peter Hegseth, the nominee for secretary of defense. She didn’t let him off easy. I trust she will vote against him. Whether we voted for Trump or not, we need our senators to be discriminating regarding his nominees for such key positions.
Looking back to President Abraham Lincoln, a good president is one that retains people on both sides of the issues. Lincoln famously included rivals even in his Cabinet. He wanted to hear their views before making decisions.
All Americans would benefit from Collins’ and Sen. Angus King’s scrutiny and “Nay” votes when it comes to many of Trump’s nominees — those who are not qualified and are even known for their reported immorality. People from both parties continue to elect our Republican and independent senators, because they think for themselves. I believe our senators will benefit in the long run by resisting Trump’s pressure and doing what is right for Maine and the United States.
