U.S. Rep. Jared Golden received a bomb threat against his home on Thanksgiving.
He was among several congressional Democrats targeted with bomb threats over the holiday. U.S. Reps. Jim Himes, Joshua Hayes, John Larson and Joe Courtney, all of Connecticut, received emails saying pipe bombs had been placed in their mailboxes, but no explosives were found, the Reuters news agency reported. U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, also of Connecticut, was reportedly targeted.
More recently, Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was targeted with two “swatting” hoaxes in December, including one on Christmas, according to ABC News and The Associated Press.
Golden told The Washington Times that he received an email message signed “MAGA,” but authorities don’t know who sent it. He speculated that it could have come from a foreign IP address.
Golden faulted the increasingly heated rhetoric from Democrats and Republicans for fueling such acts.
“For starters, both sides could stop,” Golden told The Times.
U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger told a Senate panel recently that more than 50 members of Congress have been the victims of swatting attacks since the election, according to The Times.
