WALDOBORO: Waldoboro’s most famous food exports are likely the sauerkraut and pickles made by the barrelful at Morse’s Sauerkraut, a market founded decades ago by German immigrants. But for a truly one-of-a-kind culinary ingredient, look no further than the Waldoboro green neck turnip, a variety of rutabaga which, according to legend, washed ashore in Waldoboro in 1886, like a gift from the sea gods to the land gods. It’s grown today by a handful of farms in midcoast Maine, and is praised for its size and mildly spicy flavor.

Common Ground Country Fair organizers unveiled this year’s poster design. The artist says it has a message about horses that she learned from attending the fair.
