Which ‘The Pitt’ Characters Are — and Aren’t — Returning for Season 2

The Pitt is already gearing up to film a second season — but is every fan favorite returning for more episodes of the show after that time jump?

When the medical drama premiered on Max in January 2025, viewers were excited to see Noah Wyle play a doctor again more than after ER. It didn’t take long for Us to fall in love with the entire cast including Dr. Robby (Wyle), Dr. Collins (Tracy Ifeachor), Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dana (Katherine LaNasa), Dr. Moha (Supriya Ganesh), Dr. Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif), Dr. King (Taylor Dearden), Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), Whitaker (Gerran Howell) and Javadi (Shabana Azeez).

“The truth is that we loved all these characters. You can only keep certain people in certain jobs in certain hospitals before there’s a natural changeover,” Wyle told Decider in April 2025 about choosing who returns for a second season. “I don’t know how to answer that question other than to say that it’s great that people want these characters to come back and that’s really fun to play into and away from and with, and that’s great.”

Creator R. Scott Gemmill and executive producer John Wells also spoke about how they have “found a way to do some things” so that fans could expect “some new people” in season 2.

What to Know About ‘The Pitt’ Season 2: From Possible Cast Exits to Spinoffs

“We’ll see how things shake out and who wants to stay,” Gemmill told the outlet. “Sometimes it’s who wants to stay on the show. Some people get other opportunities and we bless them and send them on their way. Kick them out of the nest, let them fly. So we don’t have any real hard rules moving forward with that. We’re just going to play it by ear, for now.”

Keep scrolling to see which The Pitt characters are returning for season 2 — and which aren’t:

Dr. Robby Robinavitch

There’s no The Pitt without Wyle’s character Dr. Robby. If Dr. Robby isn’t coming back then just shut Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital down.

Dr. Heather Collins

MAX

After suffering a miscarriage, Dr. Collins was sent home by Robby and she ultimately never returned to help with the mass casualties from the shooting. (Wyle also mentioned that, narratively, Collins couldn’t be around when Robby ultimately had a breakdown.)

There hasn’t been any concrete news about how Collins fits into season 2 but the resounding love from viewers is probably a good sign.

Dr. Frank Langdon

Creator Gemmill acknowledged that a time jump would work in Langdon’s favor amid his struggles with drug addiction and work dismissal after he was caught stealing pills.

“I think we will pick up on Langdon’s first day back at work, but it’ll be more than a month. The biggest driver of [the season 2 time jump is] Langdon. Thirty days is probably the minimum he would have to do [in treatment],” he told TVLine in April 2025. “You can do 60, 90 and part of [the time jump] is driven by when we can shoot in Pittsburgh. We’re going to shoot in September again. It has to look like the right time of year, whether it’s spring, summer or fall, and we’ve done fall [in season 1].”

Gemmill continued: “We’re going to do Fourth of July weekend. Nine, basically 10 months later, gives a lot of room for us to have developed a few stories in the interim and catch up with everyone. And with it being Langdon’s first day back, we get to catch up as he catches up with all those people.”

It is important to note that Ball is starring in a Los Angeles production of Hamlet during the month of July 2025.

Dana Evans

Despite charge nurse Dana hinting she might be done at the hospital, The Pitt isn’t ready to let her go.

“Obviously, I can’t get rid of Katherine. Obviously, Dana is an important part [of this show],” Wyle told TVLine in April 2025. “But Dana choosing to come back — if she chooses to come back, and how she comes back, and what Dana is like having made the decision to come back, and what she’s going to allow this place to either do or not do to her going forward, becomes the stuff that, you know, is the grist for the mill.”

Dr. Samira Mohan

MAX

Odds of getting to see Dr. Mohan and the others is in our favor since the writers’ room doesn’t plan to have a new setting.

“We’re never going to go to other departments. Because it will be July, everyone has been promoted or graduated to the next level,” Gemmill told TVLine. “So, for instance, Whitaker will be an intern next year — so, finally, his character will finally be getting paid. Javadi is going to be doing a sub-internship, and we find out that maybe that’s just her stalling because she doesn’t want to make up her mind about where she wants to go. So we’ll see everybody, for the most part, and some people might be working different hours and different shifts, but it’s pretty much the same crew.”

Dr. Cassie McKay

Dourif told Decider that she has to have her bangs ready to play McKay by June 2025 so we will just mark that information down for later.

Dr. Mel King

“As we were shooting, we asked them [about the season 2 setup] and they said, ‘We have no idea what we’re going to do yet.’ They are very good at what they do,” Dearden told Us in February 2025. “We have no information but it would be interesting to see the next day, I don’t think it’s going to be pick up right there [though].”

Dr. Trinity Santos

Who Is and Isnt Returning to The Pitt Season 2
MAX

Briones has been very clear that she loved playing Santos and would return for more.

“In terms of the subject matter, you are feeling just as tired as your character would be. It’s these days of really intense traumatic things that you’re seeing every day. Obviously we’re pretending, but there’s a very famous quote, ‘Your body doesn’t know that you’re acting,’” she recalled while speaking to Us in February 2025. “You just walk in and you’re seeing these amazing guest stars who are unbelievable actors and so truthful.”

She continued: “You’re watching people crying, hearing the worst news of their life or you’re watching people in pain. That still has an effect on you. To be going through it as if it is a 15-hour day, you feel that as an actor as well. But again, it makes the job easy because it’s so built into the nature of it.”

Dennis Whitaker

“That’s part of your writing campaign for the spinoff. Santos and Whittaker are The Odd Couple,” Gemmell joked to TVLine about the plot potential with Santos and Whittaker being roommates. “We talk about it, and then we shy away from it, because I think there’s a beauty to the premise in its simplicity and it’s singularity, and I hate messing with that.”

Victoria Javadi

Gemmill admitted to Decider in April 2025 that there is “some fear” they will have to naturally lose key younger characters thanks to the nature of internships and rotations.

“It’s more down the line,” she noted. “It they choose to follow an ER subspecialty, then they can stay. But for some down the line, if they want to go into something else, then they will leave. We will have to cross that boundary, or that issue when we get to it.”

Dr. Jack Abbot

MAX

In a joint interview with TVLine, Gemmill hinted that Abbot is “not going to work a day shift” but they “have a surprise for him next season.” Wells, meanwhile, added: “We also haven’t told him yet, so you’ll be breaking the news to him.”

Hatosy spoke to Us about his love for the show, saying, “I want to keep going with him as far as they want to go. I enjoy the show so much. It’s like a theater troupe. It’s a wonderful thing to collaborate on, and sky’s the limit. If they wanna make a [The] Pitt: Night Shift, I am all in, wholeheartedly.”

The Night Crew

Judging by the overwhelming response to the night crew, season 2 will find a way to sneak Ayesha Harris and Ken Kirby back on our screens.
